Jake Gyllenhaal to Star in Cary Fukunaga-Directed Biopic
Filmmaker Cary Fukunaga (2005 Film, 2015 Statue Award) will direct The American a new biopic on Leonard Bernstein, the legendary composer behind “West Side Story.” The film will star Jake Gyllenhaal as the title character. The Hollywood Reporter writes that the film, “is based on Humphrey Burton's biography, and will follow Bernstein's meteoric rise after conducting the New York Philharmonic at 25, all the while struggling with the fame of a career.” The American is set to begin production in the fall.
Cary is currently in post-production of his Netflix show, “Maniac”, starring Emma Stone and Jonah Hill. The show will be available later this year. Cary’s other projects include Netflix's Beasts of No Nation, Jane Eyre, and season one of True Detective, for which he earned an Emmy.
