John Thompson

Initial PGF Award: Film Graduate Scholarship, 2009

John Thompson credits his acute sense of color and light to being flung from a truck at age thirteen. When he regained consciousness, he wanted to be a filmmaker. By eighteen, he’d accepted a film award from AFI. Before attending the University of Southern California’s graduate film program, John earned a film degree from Southern Illinois University and gained an in-depth knowledge of pizza delivery and telemarketing. While at USC, he wrote and directed SONGBIRD (which gained attention at Sundance), won Heineken’s Music Video Competition to direct a video for Rocco Deluca, and was a finalist in Coca-Cola’s Refreshing Filmmaker’s Competition. His stop-motion short BREATHE was nominated for a 2009 Student Academy Award. John’s thesis, LEND A HAND FOR LOVE, is funded by the 2009 Princess Grace Graduate Film Scholarship.
